The Belgian joined the Red Devils in a £27.2m deal from Everton last summer as then manager David Moyes sought to bring him to Manchester with him, but he has failed to live up to expectations after a hugely disappointing season.

Moyes lasted 10 months in the role, while Fellaini made just 12 Premier League starts and came under fierce criticism from fans who are adamant he is not up to the job.

United have recently signed Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Hererra, and the Spaniard is expected to be handed a regular starting berth upon arrival and new boss Louis Van Gaal is thought to be keen on shipping him out as soon as possible.

“We will see after the World Cup,” he said.

“I don’t have to prove [anything]. I’ve been a professional footballer for eight years.”

Fellaini, however, has fared much better in Brazil as he heads into a World Cup quarter-final clash with Argentina this weekend.
