Everton have edged ahead of city-rivals Liverpool and Newcastle United in the race for Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette.

Reports in the North East have claimed the 23-year-old has turned down a move to Tyneside, due to his desire to move to a club either in, or within touching distance of, Champions League football.

The Daily Mirror reported Liverpool’s interest late last month, but Everton are now being billed as favourites for the Frenchman’s signature. The Daily Express has also linked Arsenal and Juventus with the forward.

Lacazette has scored 38 goals in 135 appearances for Lyon, since emerging from the club’s youth academy in 2010. He netted 23 of those goals last season, alerting some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

A French Under-19 European Championship winner in 2010, he netted the winning goal in the 2-1 final victory over Spain. His teammates included Antoine Griezmann, Francis Coquelin and Gael Kakuta. He has since been capped twice by France at senior international level, but was not a part of the team that travelled to the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Everton are in the market for a new striker, after seeing Chelsea loanee Romelu Lukaku return to his parent club. Arouna Kone, who missed the majority of last season through injury, is now the club’s only recognised front-man.
