Costa Rica will be hoping to extend their 2014 FIFA World Cup fairytale by reaching the tournament’s semi-finals this evening.
The Central American nation, whose only previous venture to the knockout phase of a World Cup came back in 1990 when they lost in the round of 16, began the competition as 2,500-1 outsiders.
However, their odds of winning football’s greatest prize have since been cut to 40-1 by some bookmakers following a string of brilliant performances so far.
After beating Uruaguay 3-1 and Italy 1-0, Costa Rica drew 0-0 with England and then overcame Greece in a penalty shootout.
Their victory over Greece came at a cost though, with centre-back Oscar Duarte being sent off, meaning that he is suspended for tonight’s clash with the Dutch.
Fellow defender Roy Miller is also expected to miss out, having picked up a foot injury, while goalkeeper Keylor Navas, who was the hero of the shootout with Greece, is a slight doubt because of a shoulder problem.
The Netherlands will definitely be without midfielder Nigel de Jong, who has a groin issue, but Wesley Sneijder should be fit, despite picking up a back injury in last Sunday’s dramatic 2-1 win over Mexico.
Sneijder scored an 88th-minute equaliser against Mexico, before Klaas-Jan Huntelaar completed the turnaround with a stoppage time penalty.
