Colombia left-back Pablo Armero is a surprise target for Arsenal, according to reports on the ESPN website.

The 27-year-old endured an unproductive loan spell at West Ham United during the second-half of last season, but has been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium following an impressive showing at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Armero moved to the Hammers from Napoli on deadline day in January 2014, but managed just five Premier League appearances – two of which came from the substitutes bench – with Sam Allardyce’s team losing all of the games that he played in.

The full-back is currently registered at Udinese, who bought him outright last month after previously co-owning him with Napoli, where he played in the first half of 2013-14 before falling out of favour with manager Rafael Benitez.

His potential availability has alerted both Arsenal and Southampton. A move to North London would see him provide competition for Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal, while new Saints boss Ronald Koeman is keen to find a replacement for the recently departed Luke Shaw.

The player is reportedly “desperate” to return to the Premier League on a permanent basis, and did well to put himself in the shop window during Colombia’s run to the World Cup quarter-finals. He scored the opening goal in a 3-0 group stage win over Greece, and was part of the team unfortunate to lose out to hosts Brazil in the last eight.
