Liverpool’s pursuit of a new left back is turning into one of the transfer sagas of the summer, with Brendan Rodgers now setting his sights on Mexican international Miguel Layun from Club America according to reports from the Mirror.

The 26 year-old enjoyed a fine 2014 FIFA World Cup for Miguel Herrera’s impressive Mexico outfit, who were only eliminated after two late Dutch goals in their last sixteen clash, whilst his performances for Club America in the Mexican Premier League last season have also contributed to the esteem in which Layun is held.

Liverpool have been linked with numerous left backs this summer, seeing a deal for Sevilla’s Alberto Moreno collapse before also seeing their name mentioned in connection with Chelsea’s Ryan Bertrand and Sporting Lisbon’s Marcos Rojo.

If Layun’s performances for Mexico could be replicated on a regular basis in the Premier League then he would be likely to prove to be a fine signing for Liverpool, who must improve their defence after it effectively cost them the Premier League title last season.

Layun has previously had a short spell in Europe, playing just two games for Atalanta in Serie A after joining from Mexican club Veracruz before he returned to the country with his current employers.
