The Primeira Liga side will demand €40m (£31m) for the talented Serbian international, which seems a steep price for a player with relatively little top tier experience.

Markovic is nonetheless considered one of the hottest prospects in European football and played a cameo role as his Lisbon side not only secure a domestic title but also helping Benfica to the Europa League final.

The former Partizan Belgrade man started 30 matches in all competitions in his debut season in Portugal, scoring seven goals, and a move for Markovic would certainly adhere to Liverpool’s youthful transfer policy.

Markovic is a winger with real potential and given Liverpool’s pursuit of Xherdan Shaqiri and their decision to not look to make the temporary move for Victor Moses a permanent one it would appear that youngster could be a player Rodgers looks to bring in to strengthen his options in the final third.

Liverpool have already brought in Southampton duo Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana as well as German midfielder Emre Can this summer.
