Black Cats boss Gus Poyet may well be looking to imitate Everton manager Roberto Martinez’s transfer policy by looking to supplement moves for permanent additions with the acquisition of talented temporary additions, the Goodison Park side making the most of deals to bring in the likes of Gareth Barry and Romlelu Lukaku last term.

The Stadium of Light side saw Jack Colback leave to join local rivals Newcastle United and will hope to sign England international Rodwell as his replacement and the former Everton man may well be keen to secure some regular first team football after two seasons warming the Etihad Stadium bench.

The 23 year old has started just seven Premier League fixtures since his £12m move to Man City back in August 2012.

Chelsea signed Kurt Zouma in January before loaning straight back to Saint-Etienne for the remainder of the 2013/14 season and though David Luiz has left for PSG the French youngster will struggle to force his way into Jose Mourinho’s first team set-up so could well be sent out to gain some much needed Premier League experience.

Having handed John Terry a new one year contract it’s likely that the veteran skipper will line-up alongside Gary Cahill as Mourinho’s first choice central defensive pairing.
