Manchester City could be hours away from announcing the signing of Malaga goalkeeper Willy Caballero, according to Spanish source Marca.

The Argentine shot-stopper is said to be ‘packing his bags’ as he prepares to move to Manchester, having agreed terms with the Premier League champions in a £5.5m deal, which could rise to around £8.7m depending on various clauses and bonuses.

Caballero was a reliable performer for City manager Manuel Pellegrini during his time in charge at Malaga, and his arrival at the Etihad Stadium will surely spark speculation over the future of current number one Joe Hart.

The England international endured an inconsistent campaign last season despite City’s success, and it has previously been documented that previous manager Roberto Mancini felt he needed replacing as he targeted Stoke City keeper Asmir Begovic.

It could be that Pellegrini also feels the need to bring in someone else to be first choice, though Caballero may also be coming in as backup after the departure of Costel Pantilimon from that role this summer.

The 32-year-old has earned a reputation for being one of the best goalkeepers in La Liga in recent times, and was also linked with a move to City last summer.
