The Chilean World Cup star had been made available by the Catalan giants this summer, and had been linked with a host of clubs including Liverpool and Juventus.
Liverpool had been hoping to include him as part of the deal that would see striker Luis Suarez head in the opposite direction, but he rejected the chance to move to Anfield, claiming that he and his family had their hearts set on a move to London instead.
Fans had been worried that Arsene Wenger would drag his feet in the transfer market once again, but the manager has sought to put the club’s faithful at ease by declaring his intentions for the coming season.
Sanchez joined Barcelona from Italian club Udinese back in 2011 for an initial fee of €26m. While in Spain he made 141 appearances for Barca across all competitions in three seasons, scoring 47 goals and racking up 34 assists in the process.
The news will be most welcomed by Arsenal’s support, too, having suffered through a number of injuries to key men that slowed their early title challenge down to a halt as the season continued.
Gunners fans will be hoping that it merely marks the start of manager Arsene Wenger’s summer spending as he looks to mould his squad to a level where it is capable of competing on all fronts next season.
