Having already poached midfielder Fernando from the Portuguese giants, City have seemingly returned for long time target Mangala after a protracted race for his signature.

City splashed out €15m on the Brazilian midfielder, but now O Jogo are claiming that the Premier League champions have splashed out a further €40m on the highly-rated young French defender.

The Frenchman made 51 appearances for Porto in his three seasons at the Portuguese club, and is a defender noted for his strength and ball-playing abilities.

Still raw, he missed out on making France’s World Cup squad despite picking up his first caps shortly before the tournament kicked off last month.

His performances in last season’s Champions League served to highlight several deficiencies in his game, but his signature remained highly sought after from a number of clubs across Europe.

However, should the reports be true the move could bring an end to their interest in Roma defender Mehdi Benatia, who would almost certainly be free to join Barcelona.
