For a side of Barcelona’s standing the Catalan giants have surprisingly scarce central defensive options with the likes of Javier Mascherano and Alex Song regularly being used as makeshift options.

With veteran Carles Puyol leaving the club Enrique will be keen to bring in new additions and one imagines both the named targets would be tempted by a move to the La Liga side.

27 year old White Hart Lane star Vertonghen had an average campaign last term and the departure of Andre Villas-Boas, and then Tim Sherwood, and the failure to secure a Champions League berth is sure to add further weight to a potential exit.

The Belgian can play at left-back as well as in the centre of defence and on his day the former Ajax man is a very capable customer.

German international Hummels is arguably one of the best defenders in world football and as such is perhaps an even better fit as a possible central defensive partner for Gerard Pique and given that his Westfalenstadion side are well off the Bundesliga pace, and having seen lost top-scorer Robert Lewandowski to domestic rivals Bayern Munich to boot, a move to Barcelona will be one the 25 year old would have to consider.
