The Reds agreed a deal to allow Suarez to join Barcelona in a £75m deal on Friday and will now look to re-invest the cash the striker brought in back into the squad.

Manager Brendan Rodgers had hoped to sign Alexis Sanchez as part of that deal, but the Chile international rejected a switch to Anfield in favour of a £35m move to Arsenal.

And having missed out on Sanchez, Heskey has urged the club to splash out on Monaco star Rodriguez in a bid to replace the Uruguayan properly.

“Both Alexis Sanchez and James Rodriguez have lit up the World Cup,” Heskey said.

“The latter is only 23, so you would get a lot of mileage out of him. James would be my number one [target] if Liverpool could get him.”

Rodriguez was the star of Colombia’s World Cup campaign and is currently still the tournament’s top goal scorer with six goals to his name.
