Liverpool are close to completing a £20m move for talented young Serb Lazar Markovic, and according to the Express, the 20-year-old has requested the no.50 when the transfer is complete.

Instead of wanting no.7, now available as Luis Suarez has left to join Barcelona for £75m, the Benfica man wants the number he’s worn in Portugal, and at his former club Partizan.

Markovic is rated as one of the most talented attacking midfielders in Europe, and gives Reds boss Brendan Rodgers much improved options ahead of the 2014/15 campaign.

The winger usually plays on the right of a front three, but his versatility enables him to perform equally well on the left, or in the hole behind a central forward.

Liverpool already have the likes of Raheem Sterling, Coutinho and new signing Adam Lallana as attacking midfield options, so the Markovic signing should enable Rodgers to rotate some of his wonderful young attacking talent with his side competing in the Champions League in 2014/15.
