Manager Arsene Wenger has admired the 19-year-old for some time and has been impressed with the glowing reviews within the scouting reports throughout the season.

The Gunners are said to be close to agreeing a deal to sign France international right-back Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle, but reports suggest that youngster Carl Jenkinson will be heading in the opposite direction, thus freeing up room for Chambers.

However, Southampton also have an interest in Arsenal midfielder Serge Gnabry while Liverpool’s Martin Kelly is understood to be on their radar as well.

New manager Ronald Koeman is said to be keen on replacing the club’s departed stars with talent he considers to be better, but he is said to be aware of Chambers’ ability and would be loathed to lose him to readily.

Southampton are also on the lookout for a new goalkeeper and had targeted Cardiff’s David Marshall, though they are reluctant to cough up the £10-12m the Welsh club are demanding.
