While his decision may come as a surprise to many, those that read Tom Ince’s explanation for choosing a move to Hull City rather than Inter Milan cannot fail to be struck down by the youngster’s honesty and sensibility in his decision making.

The 22-year-old, a product of Liverpool’s youth academy, has massively impressed over the last three years while playing for Blackpool. He spent the second-half of last season on loan at Crystal Palace, and proved that he had the capabilities to progress at Premier League level.

But, refreshingly, Ince has recognised that at this key stage in his development he needs to be playing regularly, and is prepared to sacrifice a big-money move abroad in order to do so.

With no disrespect to Hull, there are not many young footballers who would choose them over a European giant like Inter Milan. But Ince will be a key player for Tigers boss Steve Bruce, whereas he knows he would have been a fringe figure at Inter.

“It was very close,” he said. “I went out there and spent a good three or four days there.

“I went to the San Siro, the training ground and it was unbelievable to stand there in that environment. That’s an ambition of mine, but I don’t think you should jump the gun.

“You’ve got to realise that when you’re a young lad you have to educate yourself and make moves for the right reasons. That’s all that matters.

“At my age I have to think about football development. I’ve come here to be educated. Anyone can go to a status club and pick up five or six times more money than you could do in the UK, but I’m a footballing person. That’s why this move is right for me.”
