Oussama Assaidi is set to make his loan move of last season – from Liverpool to Stoke City – permanent, with the two clubs closing in on agreeing a £7m deal.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Stoke manager Mark Hughes is believed to have finally struck a breakthrough in his pursuit of the Moroccan international, and could complete the signing before the weekend.

Assaidi struggled to make an impact at Anfield after becoming one of Brendan Rodgers’ first signings as Liverpool boss in the summer of 2012. He made just 12 appearances for the club, only four of which came in the Premier League.

The former Heerenveen wide-man was subsequently loaned out to Stoke last season, where he impressed with a series of fine performances – scoring five goals in 25 games.

However, it seems that he has failed to do enough to impress Rodgers and co – who are happy to sell providing they make a profit on the £2.4m they originally paid for the player two years ago.

Stoke had been deterred by Liverpool’s strict transfer fee but are close to agreeing a fee which will see them pay an initial £4.5million.

Hughes had turned to Norwich winger Nathan Redmond after growing frustrated in his attempt to bring Assaidi back to the Britannia Stadium, with the Championship club turning down a £3.5million bid.

But negotiations over Assaidi have resumed over the past 48 hours and Hughes expects to permanently sign the winger, who impressed on loan last season. The 25-year-old will become Stoke’s fifth signing of the summer.
