Southampton are set to offer their 24-year old striker Jay Rodriguez a new 5-year deal as they hope to fight off interest from Liverpool, who have already signed two of their top players this summer. The Reds are also hoping to lure Rodriguez to join his ex-Southampton mates Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana at Anfield before the start of next season, reports the Daily Mail.

Southampton also lost another one of their top players in Luke Shaw to Manchester United, and are now against the sale of anymore of their players this summer. Rodriguez, who netted 17 times for the Saints last season before a knee-injury late on in the campaign ended his World Cup hopes with England, has two more years left to run on his current deal at Southampton.

He is currently undergoing rehab for his knee-ligament injury and is only expected to be back in action in October. Liverpool too have lost a key player in Luis Suarez, and their manager Brendan Rodgers is trying to add to his forward line at any cost, even if it means poaching from Southampton once again.
