Chelsea could be set to offload backup midfielder John Obi Mikel this summer in a bid to raise funds for a move for Sami Khedira, according to the Daily Express.

The Blues are determined to beat rivals Arsenal to the signing of the Real Madrid midfielder, who is seemingly available for around £20m this summer as he refuses to sign a new contract at the Bernabeu.

The German international, who was part of his country’s World Cup-winning squad this summer, has played for Jose Mourinho before when the Portuguese coach was in charge at Madrid, and may be keen to link up with his old boss again.

Despite already signing Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona this summer, Chelsea are eyeing further signings in the middle of the park, with Mourinho keen to improve on the likes of Mikel in that position.

The Nigerian international has enjoyed a long career at Stamford Bridge since arriving as a youngster, though he has increasingly been on the fringes of the first-team in recent times.

The 27-year-old only started 11 Premier League games in 2013/14, and is known for being something of a limited player, offering little going forward despite his defensive capabilities.
