Old Trafford side chase Dutch international.

Check in to Manchester United vs Swansea City

Man United boss Louis van Gaal has reportedly tabled a bid for AC Milan midfielder Nigel de Jong according to Spanish source Sport, as spotted on the ever excellent Sport Witness.

It is perhaps unsurprising that the new Old Trafford manager would target members of the Dutch national team squad he has just led to a third place finish at the 2014 World Cup though some may feel it odd that Man United would chase a player who has of course represented local rivals Man City.

Van Gaal could well do with bringing in an out and out defensive midfield addition as arguably his side is without a player of this sort, and such a move would leave Man United able to play Belgian Marouane Fellaini in a more attack minded role, having seen former boss David Moyes fail to convert the Belgian into a holding player.

De Jong has been a solid performer during his two seasons at the San Siro but his AC Milan side have struggled for form and new boss Filippo Inzaghi may well look to a more youthful squad as he puts his stamp on the playing staff he inherited from Clarence Seedorf earlier this summer.

Though de Jong is hugely experienced, with almost 400 top tier club appearances to his name and dometic title triumphs in both Holland and England, the tough tackler is still to turn 30 and certainly has plenty left in the tank and if van Gaal can secure a player of the 29 year old’s quality for as little as £8m then that would constitute something of a bargain.
