Liverpool are closing in on a long-awaited deal for Southampton defender Dejan Lovren, while they are also on the verge of tying up their surprise move for Loic Remy.

The Daily Mirror has claimed that the Reds are poised to finally complete the £20m capture of Lovren, with the Saints having given up on persuading the 25-year-old Croatian international to stay at St Mary’s.

New Southampton manager Ronald Koeman has targeted Aston Villa’s Ron Vlaar as a potential replacement, and the sale of Lovren is now likely to be pushed through in order to fund the Saints move for the Dutch international.

The South Coast club are resigned to losing a third player to Brendan Rodgers’ team this summer, with Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana having already completed their moves to Anfield. Vlaar is in the final year of his contract, and the 29-year-old could be available at a decent price.

QPR striker Remy, who spent last season on loan at Newcastle United, will likely complete his move in the coming days after agreeing an £80,000-a-week deal, with Liverpool having triggered the release clause in his QPR contract. He will cost the Reds £8.5m.

The pair will take Liverpool’s total number of summer signings to six, joining the quartet of Lambert, Lallana, Emre Can and Lazar Markovic, while Rodgers’ total spending will pass the £100m mark as he prepares for the Reds return to Champions League football.
