Liverpool are set to make a shock move for Manchester City and England midfielder James Milner, as Reds boss Brendan Rodgers looks to continue his summer spending spree.

The Daily Mirror have claimed that Rodgers has made tentative inquiries over the possibility of signing Milner, and has been encouraged by the response he has received.

Premier League champions City would prefer the 28-year-old to stay with the club, but the player is reportedly fed-up at playing a bit-part role at the Etihad Stadium, having started just 11 Premier League games for Manuel Pellegrini’s side last season.

His potential availability has attracted interest from the likes of Arsenal and Everton, but the Mirror believes that Liverpool, who have money to spend following the £75m sale of star striker Luis Suarez to Barcelona, have emerged as the favourites for the players signature.

Milner has been offered a new four-year-deal with City, and will be forced into making a quick decision over his future, so that the Manchester-club can reinvest the cash from his sale if he does decide to leave.

Liverpool have already signed Milner’s fellow England internationals Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana this summer, while Emre Can and Lazar Markovic have also arrived at Anfield. Rodgers is keen to press on with his transfer business, and has promised Liverpool fans more new signings before the start of the season, as he looks to build towards a return to Champions League football.
