Old Trafford boss Louis van Gaal will run the rule over the 28 year old England man but if he is not sufficiently impressed the Dutch manager is ready to sacrifice Rooney in his pursuit of Uruguayan Cavani.

The Parc des Princes star’s agent has hinted that his client is looking to leave the French capital and could well be tempted by a move to Man United.

Van Gaal will judge Rooney’s attitude as the former Everton man gets used to life under yet another manager following David Moyes’s disastrous tenure in charge with Robin Van Persie sure to be Man United’s key striking weapon in 2014/15.

Cavani is said to be unhappy with life at PSG and isn’t keen on continuing to play second fiddle to Zlatan Ibrahimovic and isn’t pleased with his role in a wide attacking role, though it’s not clear just how the former Napoli man could play a central role at Man United unless he were to play as part of a front two with Van Persie.

Rooney was strongly linked with a Man United exit last summer but went on to produce the goods, finishing 2013/14 as the club’s leading goal-scorer and top assist-maker.

Edinson Cavani netted 25 goals in all competitions last season following an impressive tally of 104 goals in three seasons at Napoli.
