Manchester United may be in a strong position to sign Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani this summer with the club keen to sell players to make up for their big spending, according to the Daily Express.

The French champions look likely to bring in Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria for around £50m this summer, a similar fee to that paid to Chelsea for Brazilian defender David Luiz earlier in the transfer window.

This will take PSG’s spending to around £100m, with the club under pressure to sell to ensure they adhere to Uefa’s Financial Fair Play regulations, having been fined for breaching the rules last season.

Cavani seems the likeliest player to make way after enduring a difficult season at the Parc des Princes following his £55m move from Napoli last year, and United are among his biggest admirers after his fine performances over the years.

Keen to leave PSG after being frustrated at playing second fiddle to star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the Uruguayan still managed 25 goals in all competitions in 2013/14, after a superb record of 104 strikes in 138 appearances for Napoli.

Although United already have Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and others to pick from upfront, new manager Louis van Gaal is seemingly keen on bringing in a new world class centre-forward.
