Manchester City’s Premier League title hopes have suffered a blow before the season has even kicked-off, with striker Alvaro Negredo sustaining a worrying metatarsal injury in the champions pre-season friendly with Hearts.

The Independent have revealed that Negredo expects to be sidelined “for a few months” after breaking his foot.

The Spain international, who played the first half of City’s friendly victory over Hearts on Friday, has broken the fifth metatarsal in his right foot.

“I want to let you know that its going to be hard for the next few months, I fractured my 5th metatarsal and will be out a few months,” Negredo wrote on his Instagram account with an accompanying picture of him wearing a protective boot. I will be back stronger than ever. I will return with a vengeance.”

Negredo recently insisted that he would not be leaving City this summer, despite rumours that the striker was unsettled at the Etihad Stadium. Sky Sports revealed that Negredo is ‘happy’ and ‘settled’ at the club and has no intention of leaving.

It had been suggested that the 28-year-old could return to his homeland this summer after just one year in England, following a drop in form at the end of his debut campaign that saw him fail to score in the final four months of the season.
