Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea have been dealt a major blow in their pursuit of highly rated Roma centre-back Mehdi Benatia, reports the Metro.

Roma boss Rudi Garcia has insisted that his ace defender is not for sale despite the fact that the cash-rich English giants have long been pursuing the 27-year old.

Benatia only joined Roma last summer, and according to Garcia, has pledged his immediate future to the Italian club. This means that the likes of United and Chelsea in particular, might have to look elsewhere to recruit another centre-back ahead of next season. This development impacts Manchester City in a lesser capacity as they are believed to be closing in on the signing of another of their prime defensive targets in Eliaquim Mangala.

Speaking about Roma’s plans for Benatia, Garcia said recently, “For me, it’s clear. He’s under contract and he will be a Roma player this season.”

“Fortunately the president makes a point of speaking with the players, he likes talking with everyone – he hasn’t just spoken with Mehdi, he’s spoken to them all. In my opinion Mehdi is relaxed, he’s motivated.”

It would be interesting to see who Man United and Chelsea line up as their next defensive target though as all their top targets seem to be slipping away from their grasp at the moment.
