The Black Cats had agreed a fee with Liverpool to sign striker Fabio Borini but the Italian is seemingly not keen on the switch and as such Stadium of Light boss Gus Poyet is lining up possible alternatives.

Campbell has spent the past three seasons out on loan and would’ve hoped to be welcomed into the Arsenal first team set-up given his strong World Cup display but Arsene Wenger’s purchase of Alexis Sanchez may lead to the north London side being open to loaning out the youngster to garner some much needed Premier League experience.

The 22 year old Costa Rican international enjoyed a successful season at Olympiakos last term, helping the Athens based club to a domestic title.

Arsenal signed Campbell in August 2011 but is yet to play a single competitive fixture for the Emirates Stadium side and could feel a move to Sunderland would be more likely to lead to regular first team action.
