New MLS franchise New York City FC have pulled off a major coup by signing record Chelsea goalscorer Frank Lampard on a free transfer.

England midfielder Lampard, who netted 211 times during his Stamford Bridge career, has signed a two-year contract with the American side.

The 36-year becomes just the fourth player to join the Yankee Stadium outfit, after striker David Villa, defender Jeb Brovsky and goalkeeper Josh Saunders.

With New York City not joining the MLS until next year, Villa, Brovsky and Saunders have all gone out on loan – to Melbourne City, Stromsgodset and the San Antonio Scorpions respectively.

Lampard is also likely to go on loan in the near future, but it is unclear whether a return to England is on the cards.

Romford-born Lampard began his senior career at West Ham United in the mid 1990s, making 187 first-team appearances before moving Chelsea in an £11m transfer in 2001.

During 13 seasons at Stamford Bridge, he played 649 games.

He won three Premier League tiles, four FA Cups, two League Cups, two Community Shields, one Champions League and one Europa League.

Lampard has been capped 106 times by England at senior international level.

He is expected to announce a decision on his England future very soon, with international retirement a probable outcome.
