Liverpool are set to make Southampton centre back Dejan Lovren the most expensive defender in the club’s history, with The Independent reporting that a £20m deal is imminent with the player set to undergo a medical with the Reds.

That fee would make Lovren more expensive than previous record-holder Mamadou Sakho, who was also signed by Brendan Rodgers just twelve months ago but who struggled to make the impact expected of him during his first Premier League season.

Croatian international Lovren, meanwhile, has also spent just one year in English football – but caught the eye of Rodgers with a serious of composed and dominant displays for Southampton as they charged into the top half of the table.

The Saints clearly impressed Rodgers, who has already brought Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert to the club this summer, but Lovren is perhaps the most surprising considering the fact that he cost Southampton less than £10m just one year ago.

Despite this, it is clear that Liverpool’s defence needs strengthening after it was the goals that they leaked which seemed to cost Rodgers’ side the Premier League title last season.

The potential deal has been one of the summer’s most acrimonious ones, but the report now suggests that the two clubs have agreed a fee and Lovren’s move is now imminent, with just the formality of the medical yet to be completed.
