Liverpool could be set to reward Steven Gerrard’s loyalty and fine performances for the club last season with a huge new contract, according to the Daily Star, who suggest that the Anfield club are ready to give Gerrard a new two-year deal on £150,000 per week.

The deal would almost certainly confirm that Gerrard, who announced his retirement from England duty in an attempt to prolong his club career this week, will end his career at the club with which he has spent the entirety of his playing days.

Despite making the error that allowed Chelsea striker Demba Ba to deliver the fatal hammer-blow to the club’s title dreams, Gerrard enjoyed a fine season overall for the Reds as he was deployed in a deeper midfield position by manager Brendan Rodgers.

Protecting Gerrard from the pitfalls of his waning mobility, the success of his performances in this new position seem to have persuaded the club that it is worth giving their captain an extension until 2016, one year beyond the expiry of his current deal.

The sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona means that offering such contracts will be less of a risk financially for Liverpool, who will be keen to reward Gerrard for his sterling career with the club.
