Although Tottenham do not appear to have enough quality at the heart of their defence to start the new season, they could be willing to sell their £7 million acquisition from last season Vlad Chiriches to Italian suitors AS Roma, reports the Daily Mirror.

Spurs currently have the likes of Jan Vertonghen, Younes Kaboul, Chiriches and Michael Dawson to turn to for the 2 central defensive positions in their backline and given the injury troubles faced by Kaboul, selling Chiriches could turn out to be a major gamble unless their new boss Mauricio Pochettino brings in more players.

The futures of Vertonghen and Dawson are also far from settled, and although Roma are keen to land the 24-year old Romanian, a deal is highly unlikely unless Pochettino lands reinforcements.

Chiriches failed to become a regular in his first season at White Hart Lane, owing to adaptation and injury woes, and reports are suggesting that the North Londoners might wish to recoup the £7 million they paid for him and possibly invest that money in a defender of Pochettino’s choice this summer.
