West Ham owner David Sullivan has stuck the knife into his crocked striker Andy Carroll, by claiming it was a mistake to sign the Englishman permanently last summer, reports the Telegraph.

News began circling yesterday that the striker, who signed for £15m a year ago, will miss the first four months of this season with an ankle injury, after making only 16 appearances last term due to recurring physical problems.

Now Sullivan, who sanctioned the deal to make Carroll the club record signing, has admitted that he wished he’d never shelled out the money on the powerful forward.

“Had we known what we know now we wouldn’t have signed the player,” Sullivan said.
