The Anfield side will pay around £20m for the Croatian international with a medical penciled in for the weekend as Brendan Rodgers set to bring in his fifth summer signing.

Rodgers is clearly keen to repair his leaky defence and 24 year old Lovren certainly impressed in his debut Premier League campaign last season and would represent the third Saints star to move to the Merseyside club this summer following the acquistions of Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana from the south-coast side.

Liverpool have also brought in youngsters Emre Can and Lazar Markovic.

The signing of Lovren may well lead some to believe that Kolo Toure or Daniel Agger may be set to leave Liverpool, with neither player impressing last term.

French defender Mamadou Sakho had an impressive World Cup and one imagines will be part of Rodgers’ plans, as will Slovakian centre-back Martin Sktrel.

Southampton paid Lyon £8.5m for Lovren a year ago so a sale of £20m represents a solid profit and boss Ronald Koeman will look to re-invest the funds in his severely depleted squad.
