Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has more or less confirmed the signing of Southampton youngster Calum Chambers, according to the Daily Mail.

The highly promising right-back is expected to seal a £16m move to the Emirates Stadium in the next couple of days, becoming Arsenal’s fourth signing of the summer to follow the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy and David Ospina.

A highly rated English prospect, Chambers will provide depth in a number of positions, and is worth the gamble of a relatively big transfer fee, according to quotes from Wenger.

The Gunners boss says he sees the 19-year-old as a great prospect who can play right-back, centre-back or midfield, and feels he can make an immediate impact in north London.

“He hasn’t played many games but the English players on the market in England are very expensive,” he said. “At the end of the day I was ready to take a gamble because he is a one for the future.

“He is a player I wanted because I rated his quality and intelligence. He is only 19 and can play at centre-back, right-back and central midfield. I hope he will give us competition for the players in those three positions.”

Wenger was also pleased with the signing of Colombian goalkeeper Ospina, who arrives from Nice on the back of a highly impressive World Cup campaign with his national side.

The Frenchman admits he has been monitoring the 25-year-old for some time, and that he was among three or four main candidates to come in to provide Wojciech Szczesny with some competition for the number one spot.

“I’ve known him for a long time. He went to Nice a few years ago and became a very important player.  You can see he has quality. We had three or four candidates but I decided during the World Cup to sign him.”
