Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke has admitted that he wept after he learned that injury would keep him out of Belgium’s World Cup squad this summer, The Sun reports.

The 23-year-old suffered a ruptured Achilles in training at Aston Villa back in April.

And the former Genk striker has now opened up over the heartbreak he felt at missing out on a place in the squad having been tipped to lead the line in Brazil this summer.

“Yes, there were some tears — it was hard to take,” he said.

“I felt like I had been shot when it happened but I never imagined it would turn out to be so serious. I didn’t know the full extent of the injury until the doctor examined me at the hospital. He took a look and immediately said I was going to be out for six months.”

Benteke was forced to stay at home and watch his teammates take on the world from home, though he is now on the road to recovery he also took time to recount the moment that his international dream came to an abrupt end.

“When it happened there was nobody near me but I fell down.

“It was a strange sensation, like somebody has shot you, and it hurts — it hurts really bad.

“You hear it snap and the sound is really loud.

“I tried to stand up but I couldn’t — and then the World Cup came into my mind.”
