Having failed with a previous bid for Portuguese enforcer William Carvalho reports in the Metro suggest that Arsenal may well revisit the possibility of such a move after Sporting Lisbon put the midfielder up for sale.

The Gunners offered £24m for the youngster last week only to be told that the player would only leave if hi £35m release clause was triggered but now the Primeira Liga side are apparently desperate to sell the 22 year old and as such could accept less.

Arsenal could well do with a fresh defensive midfield option with Wenger’s only players for such a role coming in the form of holding midfielder Mikel Arteta and battler Mathieu Flamini.

Carvalho impressed greatly at Sporting Libson last term, helping his side to a second place finish, and was part of Paulo Bento’s 2014 World Cup finals squad.

Wenger has already spent upwards of £60m to bring in Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy, David Ospina and Calum Chambers and as such will probably look to get Carvalho for a great deal less than his inflated release clause.
