Tottenham Hotspur could be preparing for life after Jan Vertonghen, with the Daily Express reporting that Spurs are on the lookout for new centre back options as Barcelona continue their pursuit of the Belgian defender.

New Barcelona manager Luis Enrique has installed Vertonghen as one of his key summer targets, as he looks to build on the signing of Jeremy Mathieu from Valencia and continue strengthening Barca’s previously porous back line.

Vertonghen has enjoyed a successful spell at White Hart Lane since being plucked from Ajax, developing into a key player who Mauricio Pochettino and Daniel Levy will be keen not to lose.

With the report also suggesting that Spurs are looking at Mateo Musacchio, from Villarreal, and young English centre back Eric Dier from Sporting Lisbon, however, it would seem as though they may already be preparing for losing their defensive lynchpin.

It is also suggested that the Catalan club would rather bring young Brazilian Marquinhos to the club from Paris Saint Germain – but having already splashed out on the likes of Mathieu, Claudio Bravo, Marc Andre ter Stegen and Luis Suarez, they may have to accept that Vertonghen would be a more cost effective option for this summer.
