Liverpool could be set to make a surprise bid for Barcelona right-back Dani Alves this summer, with the club desperate to offload the player and possibly set to accept offers of as little as £5m.

The Brazilian defender has been at the Nou Camp since 2008, becoming a key member of Pep Guardiola’s highly successful squad that dominated La Liga and Europe for a number of years, but is no longer in the club’s first-team plans after a slight dip in form.

The Catalan giants are also keen to make a number of changes to their squad this summer after a highly disappointing trophyless campaign last season, which saw them finish trophyless under unpopular manager Gerardo Martino.

Barcelona have already underdone a major squad overhaul, selling the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Alexis Sanchez to Chelsea and Arsenal respectively, while Victor Valdes has left on a free and Carles Puyol has retired from the game after a long career with the club.

The likes of Luis Suarez, Ivan Rakitic and Jeremy Mathieu have been brought in to the squad, but new manager Luis Enrique is keen to keep making changes, with Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado supposedly a priority target to play as a wing-back in a new-look 3-5-2 formation.

The club’s desire to bring in Cuadrado means Alves is no longer in the first-team reckoning, and it is thought that Enrique is desperate to offload the 31-year-old, and may now be ready to accept bids as low as £5m for him.

Liverpool are now showing an interest in Alves, with manager Brendan Rodgers keen to make signings in the full-back positions, with the arrival of the former Sevilla man possibly pushing Glen Johnson out to the left-hand side, which has been a problem position for the Reds in recent times.

However, Johnson is also in the final year of his contract at Anfield, and Rodgers may be bringing in Alves with replacing the England international in mind.

It remains to be seen if Alves will accept an offer from the Merseyside giants, with big-spenders Paris Saint-Germain and AS Monaco also known to be tracking him this summer, but Liverpool will be hoping to land this top quality, experienced full-back as they look to try again to challenge for the Premier League title.
