The Gunners are believed to be chasing a new signing in defence as Thomas Vermaelen closes in on a move to Barcelona, leaving Arsene Wenger’s side short of backup options to first-choice pairing Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscienly.

Nastasic has recently emerged as one of the club’s top targets, with the Serbian international possibly set to be available for a reasonable price after falling out of favour at the Etihad Stadium.

The 21-year-old impressed in his first season at City, but now faces increased competition for places in the side with Manuel Pellegrini signing Martin Demichelis last summer, and with Porto star Eliaquim Mangala expected to join this year.

Still, this has also alerted rumoured interest from Juventus, who are looking to strengthen under new manager Massimiliano Allegri, who is keen to put his own stamp on the squad inherited from his predecessor Antonio Conte.

New additions at the back appear to be a priority for the Italian giants, and Nastasic remains highly regarded in Serie A after first catching the eye at Fiorentina a few years ago, prior to his move to City.
