Arsenal and Manchester United are set to go into battle over the signing of Borussia Dortmund centre back Mats Hummels, report the Mail, with the German World Cup winner reportedly valued at around £25 million by his club.

Now rated as one of the best centre backs in the world following his emergence at Signal Iduna Park, after being discarded by Bayern Munich, Hummels would represent an incredible coup for either United or Arsenal.

He has been reported as Louis van Gaal’s key defensive target all summer, along with Ajax’s Daley Blind, and attracting him to Old Trafford would be a huge statement of intent from United to show that they can still attract the best players despite the lack of Champions League football.

Arsenal, meanwhile, may have some additional money to spend following the £15m sale of Belgian centre back Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona, and the report suggests that Arsene Wenger could choose to make an audacious swoop for Hummels with the rest of his summer budget.

Dortmund are unlikely to want to sell, however, as they look to allow Jurgen Klopp to build a squad capable of challenging Bayern Munich for domestic honours in Germany whilst also being competitive in the Champions League.
