Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has admitted that his side are lacking a player of the quality of Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria, according to FourFourTwo.

The Red Devils have recently been linked with a £55m bid for the Argentine international, who looks likely to be on his way out of the Bernabeu this summer after being strongly linked with Paris Saint-Germain in recent weeks.

However, with a proposed move to the Parc des Princes falling through, the 26-year-old may still be available for United, who are in the market for new signings on the flanks due to some poor recent form from the likes of Nani and Wilfried Zaha, both of whom may leave in a mass clear-out this summer.

Although van Gaal did not explicitly say he would be looking to bring in Di Maria, the Dutch tactician explained that his side currently lacks top class wide-players, which has affected the way he has set up his team to play in pre-season so far.

The former Bayern Munich and Netherlands coach added that United would be ready to break their transfer record if they needed to this summer.

“It is a strategy of Manchester United to do that,” he said.

“At this moment, we have five number nines and four number 10s – and we don’t have wingers to give us attacking width.

“Or, I should say, we don’t have wingers of the highest level, like Ronaldo or Di Maria or somebody like that.”
