Manchester United will launch a £15m bid for Ajax defender Daley Blind, report the Mirror, now that previous defensive target Thomas Vermaelen’s move to Barcelona has been officially confirmed.

United boss Louis van Gaal had been hoping to tempted Vermaelen from Arsenal to Old Trafford, but Arsene Wenger was adamant that the Belgian go abroad, leaving Blind as United’s favoured option.

The Old Trafford club are now lining up a £15m offer for Blind, which they feel will be enough to tempt Ajax into selling, with the Eredivise champions having already lined up Hedwiges Maduro from PAOK as a replacement.

Versatile and solid, Blind impressed massively with his performances under Van Gaal at the 2014 FIFA World Cup and would be important defensive reinforcement for a United team that looks light at the back following the departures of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic on free transfers.

Barcelona are also believed to hold an interest in Blind, but it is one that they may not follow through having captured Vermaelen, whilst the failure to sign the Belgian has also strengthened United’s resolve to ensure they secure the signing of the Ajax man.
