Van Gaal has seen veteran centre-back pair Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand leave for QPR and Inter Milan respectively and then failed to secure a deal to sign Thomas Vermaelen, with the Belgian opting to move to Barcelona, but the Dutch boss will hope to win the race for Hummels with a big money offer.
Hummels has seen his Westfalenstadion side fall way behind their domestic rivals Bayern Munich and watched one as top-scorer Robert Lewandowski then moved to the Allianz Arena on a free transfer this summer, and must now be considering his options.
Boss Jurgen Klopp insists the 25 year old is staying but a £30m offer may be hard to ignore.
Hummels played a key part in Germany’s World Cup triumph and be tempted by the chance to be part of van Gaal’s Man United revolution but should such a move fail then Man United have apparently prepared a fall back option.
Van Gaal will turn to Ajax’s Daley Blind, with a £17m bid at the ready, if a move for Hummels fails.
However it should be noted that though Blind is versatile, the 24 year old being effective at full-back and in a defensive midfield role, he is not known for filling in at centre-back so this source’s assertion that he could be an alternative for Hummels is more than a little flawed.
