Man United boss Louis van Gaal will look to rebuild his Old Trafford defence with an offer for Borussia Dortmund duo Mats Hummels and Lukasz Piszczek.

Having seen veteran veteran pair Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic leave this summer Man United find themselves short of central defensive options and with van Gaal not being confident of either Rafael or Chris Smalling effectively filling the right-back berth van Gaal will look to lure the Bundesliga pair to the Premier League this summer.

Man United are ready to table a £30m bid for the duo and will offer Japanese international Shinji Kagawa in part-exchange, with the playmaker being deemed by van Gaal as surplus to requirements.

Westfalenstadion boss Jurgen Klopp may struggle to keep hold of his top talents given his Dortmund side have not only fallen a country mile behind domestic rivals Bayern Munich but they have also seen their top-scorer, Robert Lewandowski, move to the Allianz Arena.

Both World Cup winner Hummels and Polish international Piszczek played pivotal roles in Borussia Dortmund’s back to back Bundesliga title wins in 2010/11 & 2011/12 and are two of the best in their positions in European football and could perhaps be tempted by a fresh challenge and the opportunity to work under van Gaal.

Though Man United do not have Champions League action to offer prospective signings there is a sense that the club are set for a return to form under hugely experienced boss van Gaal and the club’s owners are seemingly keen to back the Dutchman to the hilt with requisite funds.

The inclusion of Kagawa could interest Klopp, if indeed his defensive pair indicated their desire to move to Man United, with the 25 year old having been a huge hit during his time in Germany.
