Liverpool are lining up a shock move to sign former Chelsea striker Samuel Eto’o on a free transfer, with the veteran Cameroonian emerging as a contender to help Brendan Rodgers replace Luis Suarez, according to the Daily Star.

The experienced former Barcelona and Inter Milan striker scored nine goals for Chelsea last season, but his relationship with manager Jose Mourinho seemed to deteriorate after the Portuguese was caught making derogatory comments about Eto’o’s age on a secret recording.

Eto’o took it all in good humour, mocking his manager with a goal celebration involving using the corner flag as a walking stick, but he criticised Mourinho once he had been released on a free transfer at the end of the summer.

Other Premier League clubs, notably West Ham United, have been linked with a move for Eto’o, but Liverpool could now be a genuine option as Rodgers looks to secure cover quickly with the Premier League season about to kick off.

Whilst Eto’o would be unlikely to be a genuine first choice option at Anfield, he would provide useful cover for number one striker Daniel Sturridge, whilst also filling in for a number of games, with Liverpool having to contend with the additional matches that are brought by their return to continental competition.
