Bayern Munich midfielder Javi Martinez is likely to be out of action for the foreseeable future, after seemingly tearing his anterior cruciate ligament during the German Super Cup.

The Spanish midfielder’s injury wrapped up a miserable night for Pep Guardiola’s side, who also fell to a 2-0 defeat in the game itself, courtesy of goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – who pulled on a Spiderman mask to celebrate his goal.

Daily Mail reports suggest that Martinez collided with a Borussia Dortmund defender and landed awkwardly, before being carried off on a stretcher. The 25-year-old will have a scan on Thursday morning to determine the severity of the injury.

He was replaced by Brazilian defender Dante, who was part of the international side that lost 7-1 to Germany in their World Cup semi-final earlier this summer.

Dortmund went onto win the DFL Supercup – the annual fixture played between the German league and cup winners – in relative comfort.

In nine of the last ten years the game has been one of Munich and Dortmund, and Wednesday night’s result will hand Jurgen Klopp’s side the early psychological advantage ahead of the new season.
