Wayne Rooney was confirmed as Manchester United’s new club captain by manager Louis van Gaal on Tuesday night.
The 28-year-old takes the armband from Serbian centre-back Nemanja Vidic, who left Old Trafford to join Inter Milan on a free transfer at the end of last season.
Rooney, who also is the bookmakers’ favourite to become England’s next skipper, is absolutely delighted to be trusted with the leadership role at United.
He uploaded the below image to Instagram on Wednesday afternoon, along with a passionate message.
Rooney wrote: “Walking out last night as captain of @manchesterunited was an unbelievably proud moment for me and my family.
“It’s a huge honour for me to captain this great club and I will take great pride in doing so.
“I would like to thank all the fans for their support, I am looking forward to the exciting times ahead and leading their club to more success”.
