The Premier League teams not involved in European competition discovered the identities of their Capital One Cup opponents last night, as the second round draw was made.

Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United will travel to take on League One Milton Keynes Dons, who as a club did not exist the last time that the Old Trafford club played in this round of the competition.

Elsewhere, Brentford will take on Fulham in a west London derby at Griffin Park, following their extraordinary first round win against Dagenham & Redbridge – which they won on penalties after a 6-6 draw.

Last year’s runners-up Sunderland take on 2011 winners Birmingham City, Southampton play Millwall and Newcastle United take on Gillingham. No Premier League sides were drawn against each other.

The teams given a bye through to the third round are: Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Everton and Tottenham.

The full draw: Burton v QPR, Port Vale v Cardiff, Middlesbrough v Preston, Stoke v Portsmouth, Huddersfield v Nottingham Forest, Swansea v Rotherham, Watford v Doncaster, Millwall v Southampton, Bournemouth v Northampton, Brentford v Fulham, West Brom v Oxford, Scunthorpe v Reading, Derby v Charlton, West Ham v Sheff Utd, Swindon v Brighton, Leicester v Shrewsbury, Crewe v Bolton, Birmingham v Sunderland, Gillingham v Newcastle, Norwich v Crawley, Bradford v Leeds, Aston Villa v Leyton Orient, Burnley v Sheff Wed, Walsall v Crystal Palace, MK Dons v Man Utd
