Arsenal Face Competition From Valencia For Goal-Shy Serie A Striker

Gunners reportedly chasing Chilean forward.Arsenal and Valencia are reportedly the two main contenders to sign Napoli striker Eduardo Vargas this summer, according to talkSPORT.

The Chilean international is supposedly a recommendation for Arsene Wenger from another recent Gunners signing, his fellow countryman Alexis Sanchez, though his goalscoring record is fairly low for a striker at the top level.

Vargas is also capable of playing out wide or in a variety of attacking midfield roles, but remains inexperienced in Europe after failing to break into Napoli’s first-team on a regular basis before joining Valencia on loan last season.

The 24-year-old spent six months with the La Liga side, scoring five goals in 25 appearances, and Los Che are now keen to tie up a deal to keep him at the club permanently, despite rumoured competition from Arsenal.

The north London side could do with more options in attack after relying solely on Olivier Giroud in that position last season, but may also take encouragement from the pre-season form of French youngster Yaya Sanogo, as well as the returning Joel Campbell after three years out on loan.

Vargas does not quite look like being a significant upgrade on any of these players, and it remains to be seen if Arsenal will push hard to win the race for his signature this summer.
