Liverpool’s hopes of signing Paris Saint Germain striker Edinson Cavani have been all but ended, after an injury to Zlatan Ibrahimovic left the Uruguayan as the Ligue 1 giants first choice forward.

The Reds manager Brendan Rodgers has been open about his desire to sign a world class centre forward this summer – with reports suggesting that both Cavani, and AS Monaco front-man Radamel Falcao remain on their radar.

Ibrahimovic only managed 15 minutes of his team’s league game with Bastia this weekend, and PSG manager Laurent Blanc could not be forced to turn to Cavani in his quest for goals.

While the extent and severity of the injury is as yet unknown it will surely come as a blow to the French champions, as they bid to defend their crown.

The Reds are expected to tie up a deal for Sevilla left-back Alberto Moreno in the coming days, with the two clubs having already agreed a fee, and the Daily Mail believes that Rodgers will then expand his search for a ninth, and final signing.

“We just want to complete on Moreno so we have covered both full back positions and if we can get a striker on top of that, it will be it,’ said Rodgers. ‘It’s not easy, but we have to keep looking.

“We certainly need something that is going to help us over the coming season. You never know sometimes, anything can happen with a few weeks to go in the window.”

Rodgers added that he was prepared to wait until the final minutes of the window, as he scours Europe for the highest calibre of striking talent – seeking a replacement for last season’s top scorer Luis Suarez, who has left for Barcelona in a £75m deal.
