Bayern Munich could be set to join the chase for highly-rated Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, who has also been linked several times with Chelsea.

According to Spanish source Fichajes.net, Bayern manager Pep Guardiola has identified the promising French international as the ideal player to come in and fill the gap left by the injured Javi Martinez, who is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Another Real Madrid player, Sami Khedira, has also been linked with Bayern since Martinez’s injury, but it looks as though the club have opted to bring in a player in defence, with Martinez often playing at the back despite naturally being a central midfield player.

Still, Guardiola already has plenty of options in the middle of the park despite losing Toni Kroos to Madrid earlier this summer, and has chosen instead to improve his back four, with the side looking disappointing defensively in their recent German Super Cup defeat to rivals Borussia Dortmund.

Varane is an outstanding young talent and Real will not want to lose him, though it is thought that a bid of around £32m could be enough to persuade them to sell the player this summer.
